Hi-Park Multi-storey Car Park, Belfast

Belfast

Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Hi-Park is a prominent multi-storey car park located in Belfast city centre and a critical asset supporting local commerce and transport. In recognition of the innovative approach adopted for the investigation and remediation of the structure, the project received the Concrete Society Award for Excellence in Building Processes. McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake detailed investigations, develop a bespoke rehabilitation strategy and provide technical oversight during the repair works.

MCL carried out an extensive programme of inspections and non-destructive testing to assess the condition of the reinforced concrete decks and to identify the underlying causes of deterioration. The findings informed the development of a long-term repair solution addressing both structural integrity and durability, incorporating concrete repair and cathodic protection measures tailored to the condition of the affected elements.

Based on the investigation outcomes, MCL designed a comprehensive remediation scheme and acted as the Client’s representative during the subsequent NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract. Site supervision services were provided throughout the repair works to ensure compliance with the design intent, specification and quality requirements.

The rehabilitation works were delivered using a sustainable and collaborative approach, with a focus on retaining and restoring the majority of the existing structural components. The repair programme was carefully phased to allow the car park to remain operational throughout, minimising disruption to the business. The specification of innovative products and materials resulted in a durable, high-quality finish and extended the service life of this key city centre asset.
