Scottish Provident Building

Belfast

Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

The Scottish Provident Building is one of Belfast’s most recognisable historic structures, with an external façade that plays a prominent role in the city’s architectural character. McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake a detailed inspection of the building’s exterior façade to assess condition and inform ongoing management of the structure.

MCL carried out a comprehensive visual inspection of the façade to identify defects, cracking and areas of concern. The findings of the initial survey informed the development of a targeted monitoring strategy to assess the behaviour of key elements over time.

A period of crack monitoring was implemented to establish whether observed defects were active or stable, providing insight into structural movement and deterioration trends. In parallel, a topographical survey was undertaken to assess the verticality of selected façade components and to identify any deviation from alignment.

The combination of inspection, monitoring and surveying provided the Client with a clear understanding of the condition and behaviour of the façade. This information supports informed decision-making regarding maintenance and intervention, helping to protect the long-term integrity of this important city-centre landmark.
