Location: London, England
Arbor City Hotel is a seven-storey building in central London that underwent refurbishment and expansion to increase capacity and extend its service life. McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake structural and façade investigations to support the redevelopment and inform the design of appropriate repair and mitigation measures.
MCL carried out detailed investigations to the existing internal structure and external façades, including concrete durability testing, carbonation depth measurement, electrical continuity testing and corrosion assessment. Intrusive sampling was undertaken to allow laboratory analysis of extracted concrete samples, providing insight into material composition and long-term performance.
The findings of the investigations informed the development of a robust repair and corrosion mitigation strategy, tailored to the condition and constraints of the existing structure. MCL also provided ongoing quality assurance site visits and reporting throughout the construction phase to ensure that repair works were implemented in accordance with the design intent.
The investigations and ongoing technical input supported time-critical decision-making and enabled the retention and refurbishment of the existing building. This approach resulted in a saving of approximately 1,865 tonnes of embodied carbon and contributed to the successful delivery of a future-proofed four-star hotel.
