Barking Jetty is a reinforced concrete structure located on the River Thames and exposed to tidal and environmental loading. McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake a detailed condition assessment to evaluate the extent and causes of deterioration affecting the structure.
MCL carried out a programme of concrete non-destructive testing, including cover depth measurement, carbonation testing, resistivity measurements and laboratory analysis of extracted dust samples for chloride, sulphate and cement content. Concrete cores were also extracted for compressive strength and petrographic analysis.
Access to the structure was achieved using rope access techniques during suitable tidal windows, requiring careful planning and coordination. An interpretative report was prepared detailing the nature, source and significance of the deterioration identified.
Following completion of the investigations, a remote crack monitoring system was installed to record crack width and temperature at 30-minute intervals. The monitoring data enables long-term trends to be assessed, supporting informed maintenance planning and ongoing condition management of the jetty.
