Bruce Street Shaft 6 – Storm Water Tunnel

Belfast

Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Bruce Street Shaft 6 forms part of a 2.4-metre diameter storm water tunnel located approximately 15 metres below street level in central Belfast. McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake inspections and testing of the shaft and tunnel under highly constrained access and environmental conditions.

Safe access to the structure was a key challenge, compounded by the inability to bypass flows and the presence of atmospheric hazards associated with combined foul and storm water. MCL developed a comprehensive safe system of work incorporating duty and standby cranes for man-basket entry, network spotters, self-contained breathing apparatus for entrants and on-site emergency rescue provision.

The inspection and testing works were undertaken on two separate occasions, providing a unique opportunity to assess the progression of deterioration over time. The investigations included detailed visual inspections and targeted testing to characterise the condition of the tunnel lining and shaft.

Based on the findings, MCL developed outline remedial options ranging from localised concrete repairs to full GRP relining. Following selection of concrete repair as the preferred solution, MCL provided a robust repair design for the affected areas of the tunnel and access shaft, supporting safe and effective remediation of this critical asset.
