McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake specialist testing of reinforced concrete elements in support of the High Speed 2 (HS2) programme. The testing was undertaken to provide assurance of material performance and compliance with the long design and service life requirements associated with the project.
MCL carried out a range of testing activities across multiple sites between August 2023 and July 2024. These included load testing of reinforcement bars, anchor testing to chemically fixed threaded rods, Schmidt Hammer rebound testing and pull-off adhesion testing to repaired concrete beam surfaces.
The testing programme was delivered in close coordination with the wider construction team to align with programme constraints and site safety requirements. The results provided the Client with confidence in the performance of both existing and repaired concrete elements.
The findings formed a key part of the quality assurance process for HS2, supporting compliance with stringent performance requirements and contributing to the long-term durability and reliability of this nationally significant transport infrastructure.
