Jenkins Lane Sewage Treatment Works

London

Location: England

McFarland Consulting Ltd were appointed to undertake a concrete condition assessment of storm tank inlet chambers at Jenkins Lane Sewage Treatment Works ahead of the installation of new penstocks. Understanding the condition of the existing concrete was critical to ensuring the long-term performance of the new mechanical assets.

MCL carried out a detailed programme of inspections and testing, including dimensional surveys, visual inspections, hammer tap surveys and non-destructive testing using Schmidt Hammer and Ferroscan techniques. The works were undertaken within medium-risk confined space environments, with limited access and the presence of residual storm sewage presenting additional challenges.

Careful planning and risk management were required to safely deliver the investigations while maintaining operational safety. The results of the assessment provided clarity on concrete condition, areas of deterioration and residual capacity.

The findings enabled the Client to proceed with confidence in the installation of the new penstocks, ensuring compatibility with the existing structures and reducing the risk of future defects or premature failure.
